Halik did not attend school until he was 10 years old. He spend the first years of his life at home reading encyclopedias.[2]
Halik was raised in Melbourne, Australia and is of Greek descent.[3] He is the youngest son of Greek immigrants Konstantinos and Dionisia Halikopoulos.[citation needed]

Halik has traveled to 155 countries and participated in a civilian edge of space flight in a modified Soviet-built Mig25 jet. He owns homes in the U.S. Greece, Morocco and Australia.[4]
Cosmonaut training[edit]
Halik studied at the Yuri Gargarin Cosmonaut Training Academy in Moscow, Russia. He was the back-up cosmonaut for the Russian Soyuz TMA-13 flight to the International Space Station in 2008, through ultimately didn't fly.[5][6]
